Chairs, Chairs, Chairs!
Each semester, our 3rd year students take a course in our Woodshop (taught by Steve Long), where they learn woodworking techniques by reproducing a famous, architecturally significant chair. Each semester, they continue to astound with the quality of their workmanship. The chairs shown, produced by our fall 2012 semester of 3rd years students, are some real beauties. The chairs currently being replicated by our students include Gerrit Rietveld’s zig zag chair, Charles Mackintosh’s Ingram House lowback chair, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House chair and Alvar Aalto’s stool 60. These chairs literally begin as an unfinished pile of wood planks sitting on the floor of the woodshop and then, voila, the students magically transform them into beautifully crafted objects!
